The Los Alamitos Titans BU-14s took home finalist honors at the Cal South State Cup last weekend in Lancaster.
Led by Jose Garcia, the Titans were within 30 seconds of winning the championship game against Santa Barbara SC White, but the opposition tied the game at 2-2 and it eventually went into PKs, where SB prevailed, 5-4.
SB received a free kick with about 30 seconds left in regulation that was drilled in for the tying score. Garcia, Javier Hernandez, Fabian Gutierrez and Frankie Sanchez converted their PKs for Los Al, but Santa Barbara hammered home one more for the win.
“Even though we lost this was absolutely big,” Los Al Manager Frank Sanchez said. “But we’re going to keep working hard and move forward.”
Garcia scored two goals to hand Los Al a 2-1 win in the semifinals against Legends FC, including the game-winning shot with about 10 minutes to go. Hernandez and Mario Cruz tallied goals in regulation of the championship game against SB.
Los Al was riding a wave of momentum heading into the semis, having won five straight games in shutout fashion led by the play of keeper Nathan Ramos.
The squad is hoping for a wild-card entry into the President’s Cup, held in June in Washington State.
